Black Ankle Vineyard

strawbale winery in Mt. Airy, MD

The owners of Black Ankle Vineyard wanted to create a space for wine tasting that felt like home and reflected their environmental priorities. The solution is a series of super-insulated strawbale buildings (over 11,300 SF total) all designed with passive solar principles. Interior walls are finished with clay plaster. And many of the roofs are planted living roofs, helping to keep the inside cool in summer.
